Dental Coatings - PVD Coating

pvddental.jpg
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings, such as Titanium Nitride or Zirconium Nitride are applied for cosmetic reasons on dental implant collars and abutments or for reasons of wear protection on rotating dental instruments.
DOT offers ceramic coatings as follows:
Titanium Nitride (TiN)

Titanium Nitride (TiN)

Technology

For generation of the TiN coating, the energy transfer of the arc into the target releases titanium atoms, ionises them and accelerates them through the applied voltage towards the implant. During the process, nitrogen is introduced into the vacuum chamber and the nitrogen atoms combine with the titanium atoms on the implant surface to form the desired titanium nitride coating.

Properties

  • Color: golden yellow
  • Coating thickness: 0.5–7 µm
  • Roughness Ra: ≤ 0.05 µm
  • Adhesion strength: class 0 and 1
  • Coating hardness: ~ 2,300 HV

Range of Application

  • Instruments for dental use

Advantages of the Procedure

  • Biocompatible
  • Extended life time due to reduced wear
Zirconium Nitride (ZrN)

Zirconium Nitride (ZrN)

Technology

For generation of the ZrN coating, the energy transfer of the arc into the target releases zirconium atoms, ionises them and accelerates them through the applied voltage towards the implant. During the process, nitrogen is introduced into the vacuum chamber. The nitrogen atoms combine with the zirconium atoms on the implant surface to form the desired ZrN coating.

Properties

ZrN coatings only modify the surface properties. The material properties and biomechanical functionality is not altered by the coating.
  • Color: pastell yellow
  • Coating thickness: 0.5–6 µm
  • Roughness Ra: ≤ 0.05 µm
  • Adhesion strength: class 0 and 1
  • Coating hardness: ~2,500 HV

Range of Application

  • Instruments for dental use

Advantages of the Procedure

  • Biocompatible
  • Extended life time due to reduced wear
Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC)

Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC)

Technology

DLC coatings are metal-containing, amorphous carbon coatings consisting of the elements chromium and carbon. Through a PVD process both elements are converted into the requested DLC hard layer.

Properties

  • Color: black
  • Coating thickness: 0.5–2.5 µm
  • Roughness Ra: ≤ 0.05 µm
  • Adhesion strength: HF 1–3
  • Hardness: ~700 HV
  • Low friction coefficient

Range of Application

  • Instruments for dental use
Advantages of the Procedure
  • Biocompatible
  • Extended life time due to reduced wear
